Reem Acra & Preston Bailey

Fashion designer Reem Acra, the leader in innovation and modernity in the bridal industry has shown her latest collection in the New York Public Library’s famed Gottesman Hall. Over 30 looks combining bridal and ready-to-wear were shown in a set collaboratively designed by the renowned event planner Preston Bailey.

The show, titled The Celebration Collection, evoked the scene of a surreal, cinematic wedding party. Opening the show were ten colorful modern brides, bridesmaids and wedding guests in divine sorbet shades, who set the mood of a fun, lively fete. The ready-to-wear collection featured cocktail dresses in notably shorter lengths, full of the exquisite bead work that Acra is known for. Lace was a key fabric, layered with tulle and rendered in soft shades of baby blue, lilac and pale pink.

The brides followed in Acra’s signature style of taking traditional bridal elements and silhouettes and making them thoroughly modern. The collection has a very distinct lightness to it- ball gowns are graceful with curved and sculpted necklines, and soft a-line shapes feature re-embroidered lace and illusion mesh. The accessories are equally glamorous- long flowing veils, lace full-length capes and jeweled opera length gloves completed some of the key looks. Fabrics of note are silk Mikado, silk organza, chiffon and brocade.

“The idea of creating the world’s most over the top- glamourous bridal dinner party was an idea I have wanted to do for years. I loved the idea of combining my ready-to-wear with bridal for the Celebration collection- injecting color and fun into the show. Partnering with Preston to create the set was a true honor and joy, as a Preston Bailey event is an event like no other. I can think of no better complement to my gowns than the glamourous fantasy world that he has created in the New York Public Library, “says Acra

The set was the culmination of hundreds of hours of planning and construction. Imported lace swathed hand wrought sculptures, roses and hydrangeas were flown in in from Latin America and a 32 foot long dramatic tableau completed the set- created to showcase the dramatic beauty of Acra’s gowns.

“I’ve known Reem as a friend and admired her work for many years- I am so happy to collaborate with her and combine our shared vision. I am always inspired by nature and incorporate it into my designs, and I was fascinated by the idea of creating natural elements, such as trees- out of lace. For the tableau we created a fantasy- an opulent, dream like setting for the most glamorous wedding party,” said Bailey.
